Rural Tourism

For nature lovers, it is well worth a trip into the humble mountains of the high plateau: Teja, Salinas and the El Carche sierra, covered in pine trees, oaks, rosemary, lavender, junipers... and the breathtaking sights from one of the large parallel crests, from which you can see, in the distance, the “north-west lands”.

Travelling through Murcia (less than a few hours from Nueva Ribera), you can visit the high plateau, the “North-West lands” or the coves and beaches of its coastline, much of which is still unspoiled. Starting with the high plateau, there is the desert, with the sweet aroma of thyme and rosemary Yecla and Jumilla wait with their fine local wines, their plains and crags riddled with archaeological sites -such as those of Monte Arabi and its cave paintings. Vineyards and olive groves bordering on solitary lands, form extraordinary landscapes with the green and ochre, yellow and red of the fruit trees. Here and there you will find a castle or an isolated monastery, being the heritage of a culture three thousand years old.

Enchanted land of conquerors, echoing with legends and stories from the past and forests full of wild game where crystalline mountain rivers feed the lush vegetation in the fertile meadows sheltering highly valued fauna, in one of the most important genetic and biological areas on the Iberian Peninsula. Reserves such as El Sabinar, La Serreta and Collado de Orbarroya, host relics of ancient woods that formerly covered large expanses of the Iberian plateau and of the Northern part of Africa.

Areas where you can get away from the noise, hustle and bustle. Like the old city of Moratalla or the fantastic mountain scenery nearby, with the highest peaks in the region (such as the Pico de Revolcadores at 2,084 metres), and the El Cenajo reservoir. Other discoveries: Cehegin, Bullas, Calasparra... further on is Abanilla (they used to come here from Damascus to buy dates) and Fortuna with its Roman spas, palm trees and light. To relax after a pleasant winter’s day in the country, there is nothing better than being in front of an open fire, or, in summer, preparing a delicious barbecue in the Moorish oven of the country houses for rent throughout the region, which offer all kinds of facilities to make your stay unforgettable. This network of rural accommodation also includes inns, hotels, campsites, apartments, bungalows and wooden cabins for a holiday with a difference.
