This is the fiscal identity number and is essential for your financial dealings in Spain. This can take a few weeks to obtain, so plan ahead. You fill in a form with your lawyer & show him a colour `passport’ photo, a photocopy of your passport + your passport. The lawyer then obtains your NIE number from the local police station. You will need to set up a Spanish bank account (local preferred), if you want your property bills paid via direct debit.
If you spend more than six months a year in Spain, you need to apply for a Residentia (to become a Resident). Being resident does not restrict you and it has many advantages e.g. lower taxes. If you don’t become a resident, you must appoint a fiscal representative.
